Ever imagined life on a desert island? Well, the closest you may well come to this is a day at the Caledesi Island State Park, just off the city of Clearwater. The park is regularly recommended as one of the best beaches in the USA and it is easy to see why. Its lack of crowding is unique on a beach of such beauty. One reason for this is that for years the island was only accessible by boat. A hurricane in 1985 created a sand walkway to the island but the easiest way to get there is still over water. The park is actually made up of six islands and is one of the few undeveloped barrier islands in Florida. You can lie back and imagine you are the only occupant of the island as shore birds and sea turtles build their nests and the long hairgrass rustles in the gentle breeze. Of course, some man-made luxuries are provided. Picnic pavilions and bath houses are situated on the island and nature studies, shelling and fishing can also be organised. Weather permitting, ferries leave nearby Honeymoon Island State Recreation Area every hour for daily excursions and the park remains open from 8 am until sunset. |
